How Vaginal Steaming Works

A simple, traditional self-care ritual โ€” explained plainly.

Vaginal steaming โ€” also known as a yoni steam, V-steam, or bajos โ€” is the practice of sitting over a pot of warm water steeped with herbs and allowing the gentle, fragrant steam to rise. Versions of it appear in traditional self-care customs across the world, from Korea to Central America to West Africa, passed down mostly between women as a warming moment of rest and ritual.

People come to steaming for different reasons โ€” many simply find it deeply relaxing, warming, and grounding, a quiet pause in a busy life. It is a wellness ritual, not a medical treatment, and that is exactly how we offer it.

Why copper?

Copper is the natural vessel for steam. It holds heat gently and evenly, so the steam stays soft and lasts longer than it would in a thin or plastic pot. Copper is also naturally easy to keep clean between sessions. Our Copper Steam Pot is hand-formed and made to last a lifetime.

A session, step by step

  • Steep. Bring water to a boil, pour it into your copper steam pot, and add a small handful of steam herbs. Let them steep for a few minutes.
  • Cool to comfort. This is the most important step. Let the steam settle until it is pleasantly warm, never hot. Always test it with your hand and the inside of your wrist before sitting.
  • Settle in. Place the pot beneath your steam seat, sit comfortably, and wrap a blanket around your waist and legs to hold the warmth in.
  • Relax. Steam for about 10โ€“20 minutes. Breathe, rest, read, or simply be still.
  • Rest afterward. Get up slowly, keep warm, and give yourself a little time before rushing back into the day.

How often?

Many people enjoy a steam occasionally โ€” a gentle ritual now and then, not every day. Listen to your body, keep sessions short and warm rather than long and hot, and never steam more than feels comfortable.

Please read this first. Steaming is not right for everyone. Do not steam if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have an IUD, are trying to conceive in the second half of your cycle, or have an active infection, irritation, or open sores. Steam should never feel hot. See our full Safety & Comfort guide, and talk with your healthcare provider if you have any condition or concern.
